Fujitsu Lifebook T4000 Series
List price: from US$1,949

BEST TABLET PC CONVERTIBLE
- The handsomely designed Fujitsu LifeBook T4000 Series is a notebook
convertible that replaces the short-lived T3500. It is a competent,
full-function notebook with powerful Intel 1.6 or 1.8GHz processors,
and an internal DVD, DVD/CDRW or DVD writer. There is excellent
connectivity via either 802.11b/g or a special 802.11a Atheros version,
PC Card, SD Card, SmartMedia reader, as well as FireWire and the usual
USB/VGA/audio ports (as well as Gigabit LAN connectivity). The T4000
comes with the terrific 12.1-inch Hydis display, an outdoor-viewable
option of that display, or the 1400x1050 pixel non-wideangle display
seen on the Toshiba M200. All of this weighs just 4.3 pounds, making
the Lifebook T4000 Series a supremely flexible and powerful
notebook/tablet computer from the industry’s most experienced
tablet vendor. |

Motion Computing LE1600
List price: from US$2,199
www.motioncomputing.com |
BEST TABLET PC SLATE
- Brand-new on the market, the Motion LE1600 Tablet PC is a testimony
to the company’s never-ending quest to be at the very
forefront of Tablet PC technology while offering eminently practical
products via a superb distribution system. The LE1600 is an evolution
of the M-Series’ design rather than a revolution. Thanks to
an entirely new Magnesium alloy/carbon fiber case, the LE1600 feels
extremely sturdy and solid while actually being a bit lighter than the
M-Series models. The LE1600 is thinner and can accommodate a flat
extended battery on its back for true full-shift operation.
Communication is via Bluetooth, Gigabit LAN, 802.11b/g (802.11a
available). There is a DVI-D connector, a SD card slot, the
incomparable Hydis wideangle display, security via software and a
fingerprint reader, and a fast Intel LV 758 processor. A superb Tablet
PC slate. |

Panasonic Toughbook 18

BEST RUGGED TABLET PC CONVERTIBLE
- The CF18 represents the sole Tablet PC offering in
Panasonic’s lineup of Toughbook ruggedized mobile computers.
Panasonic practically pioneered the use of magnesium in mobile
computers and uses it extensively in the CF18. With a footprint of just
10.7 x 8.5 inches the CF18 is barely larger than the little Acer C110,
and despite its significant ruggedness, at 4.5 pounds it weighs barely
more than a consumer convertible. Like those two business-class Tablet
PCs, the CF18 is a notebook convertible with a display that pivots
around and lays down flat to turn the computer into a tablet. Under the
hood, the CF18 is state-of-the-art with Intel Pentium technology, USB
2.0, an array of advanced options (including Bluetooth, GPS, and many
wireless standards), and superb connectivity. The CF18 also houses a
substantial 52 WHr battery for long life. |

Xplore Technologies ix 104C2

BEST RUGGED TABLET PC SLATE
- A veteran of the rugged mobile computer industry, Xplore Technologies
has plenty of experience with pen slates. Sporting exemplary industrial
design, the flagship iX104C2 Tablet PC is extremely tough,
technologically completely up-to-date, yet also has an attractive
industrial design with each detail well thought out. Its
“AllVue” display is superior to anything else
we’ve seen. A magnesium housing/chassis and plenty of sealing
and damping materials result in toughness and an IP67 rating despite
the fact that the device has more onboard ports and connectors than
other rugged slates. Xplore also offers innovative
“snap-on” expansion modules, several display
options, and there is ample room for internal expansion. The machine
can be ordered with a combined active/touch screen digitizer system and
a variety of specialized docking systems. |
