Pen Computing > Win CE > Handheld PC Microsoft used the term "Handheld PC" for the first generation of tiny clamshell handhelds based on the Windows CE operating system. Introduced in the Fall of 1996, HPCs were not universally accepted and went through several iterations of hardware and software. The small form factor gave way to larger designs, including some that used the standard VGA and SVGA screen format. At this point, only Hewlett Packard and NEC seriously pursue this form factor. Below you find resources pertaining to the Handheld PC and its development over the years.
