The Daily China News' "Asia Info" column published on 18Sep98 reports that Microsoft China will have a Chinese-savvy Windows CE device by for sale in China by the end of 1998 to compete with 3Com's future Chinese-savvy PalmPilot device.

WaveSpan has announced a new product called the WaveSpan 5800 that can wirelessly transmit data at 10 Mbits per second between 5 miles apart towers (maximum) in the "unlicensed 5.8-gigahertz spectrum." [Inter@ctive Week, Carol Wilson, 14Sep98, page 31]

PC World examines "COMPAQ ADOPTS AMD'S MOBILE K6: Presario notebook is the first to be based on AMD's low-power 300-MHz K6 processor." ZDNET's PC Week also covers this new processor.

The U.S Army has just completed a series of very robust testing on ruggedized notebook computers that can be used in "combat vehicles." Systems were tested from only two companies, though: Litton Data Systems and Phoenix Group. However, many different configurations were tested: 190 combos from Phoenix Group, and 40 from Litton. The systems chosen will ultimately be used on the US$282 million Force XXI Battle Command Brigade and Below (FBCB2) contract.

The Forbes published on 05Oct98 examines "Virtual Bestseller" on page 92. The article looks at the efforts of David Gettman's Online Originals publishing company that distributes electronic media in various formats including PalmPilot savvy versions.

Traveling Software will by the end of 1998 have a Windows CE client to their LapLink Professional desktop solution to give mobile users direct access to their desktop system from a dial-up connection. [InfoWorld, Ephraim Schwartz]

Avi Drissman reports the release of Minimizer v1.02 for the Newton that fixes a "subtle conflict between Minimizer and Steve Weyer's NewtsCape" but is recommended for all Minimizer users.

Richie Cruz reports the creation of two Newton Books (one text and the other with pictures) that summarize the current state of Beanie Baby prices. Check out the graphics (463K) version, or the text (53K) version.
